Part 3

It was early morning but Vaust found himself already being interrogated by someone, this time Syndra. He knew she was going to be trouble, and he hated being right.

"Who's buried at the Valmaris statue, Innkeeper?" Syndra asked again. "I know you know."

"Even if I did, why would I tell you?" Vaust responded defensively. "Go away."

"I'm going to find out who you are, Innkeeper. When I do, well you better be ready." Syndra said, her face a contortion of anger and rage. "Or maybe I'll just dig up the grave."

Vaust inhaled at that remark. Disturbing the Graveyard of the Lost was strictly forbidden by both Eigengrau and King Zarfangal. He put down the mug he was cleaning and placed both hands on the counter.

"Listen to me very carefully, Syndra. Exhumations in the Graveyard of the Lost are strictly forbidden. Don't even think about it." Vaust said, calmly but threateningly.

"Who's going to stop me, you?" Syndra said, laughing. "The old man of the Inn? Rangers!"

"Ma'am!" Cithrel and Lhoris said, standing at attention immediately.

"We're going digging." Syndra said, taking one last look at Vaust, before leaving the Inn.

Vaust knew he couldn't wait for luck to cause an intervention, and pulled an amulet out of his pocket bearing Eigengrau's sigil. He ran his finger over the sigil, drawing it, and when he was finished, Eigengrau appeared in front of him.

"Vaust, this must be important. You look frazzled." Eigengrau said, raising an eyebrow.

"Syndra, she's going to dig in the graveyard! She's going to dig at the Valmaris Statue!" Vaust exclaimed, pointing at the door. "She just left!"

"Oh, did she?" Eigengrau said. "I will arrange for the circumstances."

Eigengrau arrived at the statue just as Syndra and the Rangers had begun digging. She snapped her fingers, and pulled the four of them outside of time, surrounding them all with a barrier of ice.

"Syndra, what are you doing." Eigengrau said flatly but angrily. "Exhumations are forbidden."

"Tell me who's buried here." Syndra said, resting on her shovel. "Your man in the Inn was very frustrating."

"Vaust only knows the rules, not the reason." Eigengrau stated, before realizing she made a mistake.

"He's Vaust?" Syndra asked with a wicked smile. "The God of Luck himself? Old Man Vaust?"

"I should not have said that." Eigengrau stated. Internally, she was screaming at herself. How could she be so stupid?

"We'll make you a deal, Eigengrau." Cithrel said, smiling. "We'll forget he's Vaust if you tell us who's buried here."

"I could just kill all three of you." Eigengrau stated.

Cithrel stopped smiling, and even Syndra looked nervous for a moment.

"Got you." Eigengrau said, as deadpan as ever. "No, I erred. But are you sure?"

"Sure of what?" Syndra asked, eyeing Eigengrau suspiciously.

"Of wanting to know."

"Of course I am! I've got fucking shovels!" Syndra said, exasperated.

"Fine. You are the one buried there." Eigengrau said, grinning, exposing her shark like teeth.

"Ah fuck." Syndra said, dropping her shovel. Of course. From her first death.

"Uhhh, ma'am?" Cithrel asked. "Was she threatening you?"

"We're leaving, Cithrel. Come on Lhoris." Syndra said, shaking her head. She drew a symbol with her hand, and they disappeared, leaving behind a puddle of water.

Eigengrau knelt down and poked the water with her finger. Curious, Syndra's magic could let her leave from here? This required invesigation.investigation. Still, Eigengrau was satisfied. Syndra left, and didn't discover who was actually buried there, making this a success.
