Part 3
Rebecca had tears in her eyes as she approached The University, walking on the wide path. She often wished she had settled down with Xilro, despite their incompatibilities. The time for regrets was the past though, she thought as she triggered the first anti-vampirism countermeasures The University had. Deftly dodging the flames, she continued forward on the path without pause. Alarms sounded as she triggered the second set of runes, and her path was blocked by mages running out of the main gates.
"Begone, foul beast, your kind are not welcome here!" One shouted, his hands covered in flame.
"Step aside children, I'm here to see my betrothed." Rebecca said angrily, leaping over them and continuing into the university grounds. Her soul burned brightly as an aura around her as she triggered the third set of runes, absorbing and reflecting the divine spells with ease. Soon Headmaster Demeter appeared to block her path, enclosing the two of them inside a barrier.
"Well isn't this a surprise. Rebecca Montague if I'm not mistaken." Demeter said, tapping his staff on the ground. "You're not the type for noisy entrances, so you're the distraction while we get robbed blind."
"I have another job already, I'm not here for your trinkets, Demeter." Rebecca said, annoyed that she couldn't break the barrier. "This isn't a normal spell."
"Good eye. This is a seventeen layer barrier. Even Vordea had trouble breaking through it." Demeter said with a smile. At least she could appreciate good magic.
"A spatiotemporal barrier... wait no." Rebecca began, before shaking her head and slapping herself. "I'm getting off track. I'm here to see Xilro."
"You know Lord Xilro well enough to just call him that?" Demeter asked with some surprise. This was definitely unexpected.
"Of course I do, I nearly married him, but that was a very long time ago." Rebecca said softly, looking away. "My beloved Dragon Prince, the soft and gentle Xilro. Do you know why he became the Flamemaster?"
Demeter was confused, it was like he was talking to an entirely different person now. Who was this? Was it really Rebecca Montague? Still, the question was too tantalizing to pass up.
”How?”
”Have you ever heard the name Saffron Frostfall?” She asked. “It was on our wedding day…” She trailed off and looked down, as if about to cry. Just as suddenly, she started to scream, punching herself on the face and body, drawing blood with her fingers as they scratched her face over and over.
”Rebecca!” Demeter yelled, moving closer.
”That’s right! I. Am. Rebecca. Astrid. Montague! I am no longer Saffron Frostfall! She has not been me for thousands of years! It is only me!” Rebecca yelled, grabbing Demeter by the collar and shaking him.
It was then that the barrier collapsed, revealing Xilro waiting outside. He looked as if he had been crying, and ran to Rebecca immediately.
”Xilro…” Rebecca said, before collapsing into his arms, unconscious.
