Part 1

Heather decided to go talk with Hamlin regarding the events in the Castle, and was surprised to see him putting up old folklore anti-demon wardings around the Church when he arrived.

"Oh, did she visit you as well?" Heather asked, gesturing at the various pieces of paper hanging on the church.

"The demon came and visited me, yes. Asked me several confusing questions before leaving. Why does she wear that damn face?" Hamlin said, nearly whispering.

"She not tell you?" Heather asked. Seeing slight confusion on Hamlin's face, he pointed at Hamlin's office.

Once inside, Heather saw even more wardings on the walls, to his mild amusement.

"If she's as powerful as she says, I don't think any of this will work, you know." Heather said.

"It's worth an effort. Now what did she not tell me?"

"Demon Queen Xellma is Rebecca. I'd recognize my wife in any skin." Heather answered, hands on his lap.

"She just looks like her, it's a demonic trick Heather."

"No. She told me things only Rebecca would know, then playfully bullied me in the same way Rebecca always did. She also told me she," Heather paused, his voice shaky. "She told me how much she loved me, and always did. She also said she came to say goodbye, because she didn't get the chance to do that." Heather paused, then looked back up at Hamlin. "She also greatly embarrassed both me and Verka in front of each other with that infuriating power of hers she called Queen's Orders. You said she asked you confusing questions, though?"

"Hmmm, yes." Hamlin said, recalling them. "She asked me if I considered Rebecca a friend, if I regretted being her friend, and if I loved her."

"I get it. The questions she could never ask when she was alive." Heather said, patting Hamlin on the shoulder.

"What did she ask you?"

"Absolutely not. You have enough blackmail on me as is." Heather said, shaking his head. "She said she'd be at the private funeral to say good bye to herself."

"Well the funeral will certainly be interesting." Hamlin admitted. "Should we tell the other kids?"

"No. If Verka doesn't I won't. I don't think she intended for us to know, it just kind of slipped out when she saw me."

"I refuse to believe it's her, to be honest." Hamlin said, leaning back in his chair and sighing. "That was a demon wearing her memories."

"What's the difference?" Heather asked thoughtfully. "If a person is the sum of their memories, then a demon with Rebecca's memories is still just Rebecca."

Hamlin and Heather debated philosophy for nearly an hour before a knock on the door came. Hamlin excused himself and got up.

"High Priest, your excellency, the private funeral is starting now. The woman with black horns you advised us to keep a lookout for arrived a short while ago." One of the church attendants told Hamlin, bowing.

Heather nodded, and together with Hamlin and the attendant, left the office. Entering the main hall of the Church, Hamlin made eye contact with Xellma, who simply waved before melting away into a puddle of ink.

"Well that was ominous." Heather said.

"Maybe she won't come back." Hamlin offered.
